Andrene Wright-Johnson is an Assistant Professor of African American Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison whose research examines Black political behavior and urban politics at the intersection of race, gender, and class. Her current book project, Close to Power, examines the political promise and limitations of Black women’s leadership in majority-minority cities, exploring how their lived experiences shape political decision-making and how communities receive and evaluate their representation. Her broader research advances our understanding of identity politics by centering Black feminist perspectives in the study of advocacy and political decision-making and using mixed-methods approaches to account for intragroup differences within marginalized communities.
