Co-curated by Professor Ethelene Whitmire and Leslie Anne Anderson (Chief Curator of the National Nordic Museum), the exhibition entitled “Nordic Utopia? African Americans in the 20th Century” was profiled by Victoria L. Valentine for Culture Type, an independent art editorial project. Culture Type, a site that covers up-and-coming Black visual artists in addition to established and historical artists, focuses on reviewing art, interviewing artists, and giving press coverage to museums to explore “the intersection of art, history, and culture”.
Valentine’s latest piece, published May 14, 2024, delves deeply into the main artists featured in “Nordic Utopia? African Americans in the 20th Century”: painters Herb Gentry, William Johnson, Walter Williams, and Howard Smith in addition to musicians like Josephine Baker and Anne Wiggins Brown. The exhibition is currently on view at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle until July 21, 2024. The exhibition will travel to Madison, Wisconsin in August 2024 before moving to the Scandinavia House in New York, New York.
