The Department of African American Studies fully supports the Blk Pwr Coalition and the students who have spoken out against the vile, racist video from a UW student that surfaced recently on social media. We see you, we hear you, we care about you. We are dismayed by the silence of so many campus units. The burden of responding to racism too often falls disproportionately, sometimes exclusively, on Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. We therefore encourage campus entities, including student organizations (especially those that previously have proclaimed their intolerance of racism), faculty, departments, programs, and administrative units to publicly reaffirm their abhorrence of the video and their rejection of all forms of racism. We understand that actions, not only words, are important, but in a university setting we also know that words do matter.
